With a small amount of money her mom had left her, Michael Kennedy decided in May 2015 to put her years of experience as both a theater artist and a human services professional into creating something new. Collaborating with 18 local individuals recovering from substance use disorder was the foundation of the script for "Any Addict" — and when its performances raised enough to put toward a second project, Creative Action Unlimited was born.
Now in its ninth year, Creative Action Unlimited has produced over 15 original stage and film productions, addressing a wide spectrum of social issues including racism, classism, sex trafficking, suicide, totalitarianism, motherhood, and re-entry after incarceration. Each piece remains available for licensing by community organizations and educational institutions seeking a way to open up dialogue and begin to address some of the biggest challenges facing society today.
Creative Action Unlimited became a 501(c)(3) in 2020. The organization works with numerous artists and performers from the surrounding community, and in 2022 paid a total of over $16,000 to 29 local artists for their work. Its continued growth is reflected in additional offerings that now include the Creative Action Playback Theater Company, the Social Justice Artists Collective, and Perspectives: A Creative Action Unlimited Podcast.
