Jean Tansey is a painter whose subjects range from environmental degradations, social injustices, and women’s issues, to name a few. Her paintings draw the viewer in with vibrant colors and lush brush strokes, the back stories then emerge. In her day job as a social worker, she has listened to many individuals, their struggles being compounded by forces outside of their control; poverty, addictions, housing, economics, imperialism, etc. This exposure to the individual’s experience in these wider forces has informed her perspective and strengthened her resolve to be part of the collective responsibility to be a voice for the sometimes voiceless. Jean has a long history of volunteering, most recently teaching counseling and human services to incarcerated men in the New York State prison system as a college level instructor through Rising Hope, Inc. Since 2017 Jean and her partner have restored an 1890’s brick storefront in Troy, The Storefront Gallery, is a listening room and incubator space hosting original music and focusing on art which has a point-of-view. Group shows @3442ndStreet include: The Other Virus, WTF!ART!, PUSH/PULL, WOMENXWOMEN. Jean exhibits her art in the Hudson Valley and Capital regions and can be found on Instagram @Jean.Tansey
